The Tree Constraints Plan is is used before embarking on a development project. The plan takes into consideration the constraints caused by trees and their roots which divides it into a two part assessment: above ground constraints and below ground constraints.

These constraints affect significant aspects of a project. These aspects include things like shading – will the surrounding buildings get enough light? Will views be obstructed? The constraints can also affect underground services such as plumbing pipes, electricity wires, etc.

During the tree constraints planning process the following factors will be taken into account:

  1. The type of trees, their position and dimensions.
  2. Any incompatibilities regarding the trees and the proposed development.
  3. The protection of the tree during the development process that may come from heavy machinery, excavation or stock piling of materials on site.
  4. The space around the trees; there should be enough space for pruning, there should be a height restriction on vehicles if the tree canopies are too low, etc.
  5. Evaluation of the space around the trees that will be retained.
  6. Planting of new trees to mitigate the loss of others will also be considered.
