Arborist Apprenticeship in Ireland: A Training Day with Holly Arboriculture and GRETB

Equipping Students with Tools for Modern Tree Risk Assessment

We recently took part in the Arborist Knowledge Transfer Event held at Petersburg Outdoor Education & Training Centre in Galway, organised as part of the GRETB and Arborist Apprenticeship Ireland initiative. The students attending are currently enrolled in the Advanced Certificate in Arboriculture, a programme designed to equip future professionals with the skills needed to build a successful career in tree care.

It was a good day of shared learning, where we had the opportunity to speak with apprentices from a wide range of backgrounds, introduce the tools we use in our own consultancy work, and most importantly, learn from the curiosity and insight of Ireland’s next generation of arborists.

Focused and Committed to a Career in Arboriculture

Most of the students we met were already pursuing a career in tree surgery or arboriculture, with a clear goal of building hands-on skills and advancing in the industry. A few came from related areas like horticulture or landscaping, showing how different outdoor career paths can lead into professional tree care.

What united them all was a shared interest in working with trees as a career—and a real commitment to learning more about modern practices and how to use technology in the field.

Tree Care Education Meets Real-World Tools

As part of the session, we introduced the students to two of the key technologies we use in our consultancy work at Holly Arboriculture. Our aim was to highlight how modern arboriculture combines field knowledge with accurate data to make informed decisions.

We demonstrated the following equipment, both of which play a major role in advanced tree care education in Ireland:

  • The Arborsonic 3D Acoustic Tomograph – a non-invasive system that helps detect internal decay in trees. More information here.
  • The DynaRoot System – used to assess root stability. More information here

For many students, this was the first time seeing advanced tree assessment equipment in action. They asked thoughtful questions throughout and had the chance to use the tools themselves—bringing the theory to life in a meaningful and practical way.

Learning in the Classroom and On Site as part of Arborist Apprenticeship in Ireland

We started the day in the classroom with an overview of the theory behind the Arborsonic 3D Acoustic Tomograph and the DynaRoot System. Using real-life case studies from development sites, heritage trees, and public spaces, we explained how these tools are applied in practice to support informed decision-making.

In the second half of the session, we moved outdoors, where students had the chance to use the equipment themselves and interpret the results. This hands-on experience offered a practical glimpse into the daily work involved in arboriculture and training for outdoor jobs in Ireland.

The Value of Hands-On Arboriculture Training

For anyone considering forestry and arboriculture courses in Ireland, practical learning days like this one are an essential part of the journey. They help bridge the gap between classroom theory and real-world application—showing students how modern arboriculture combines ecology, risk assessment, and technology.

At Holly Arboriculture, we believe the best courses for nature lovers in Ireland are those that offer this balance. Opportunities to apply knowledge in the field not only build skills, but also give future arborists a clear sense of the work involved and the tools that support it.

What’s Next?

We’ve been asked to return and continue supporting the programme and future students. It’s clear there’s a strong interest in learning how arboriculture is evolving, and we’re proud to be playing a part.

Testimonials

To round off the day, both students and their instructor shared their thoughts on the experience—here’s what they had to say.

We had the pleasure of welcoming Paul Holly from Holly Arboriculture Ltd. as a guest demonstrator for the National Apprenticeship in Arboriculture, and his contribution was nothing short of exceptional. Paul brought a wealth of knowledge, professionalism, and passion that truly resonated with our students.  His hands-on demonstrations showcased not only technical excellence in modern arboricultural practices but also the importance of safety, precision, and environmental responsibility.
Paul’s approachable style and clear explanations created an engaging learning environment that encouraged questions and participation. The apprentices greatly benefited from observing modern techniques in real time, giving them a deeper practical understanding of the skills they are working to develop.  Paul’s demonstrations helped bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world application.
Having professionals like Paul involved in our programme is invaluable.  It connects students directly with leaders in the industry and helps inspire the next generation of arborists.  Holly Arboriculture Ltd. sets a high benchmark for quality and integrity in the field, and Paul’s involvement significantly enhances the educational experience.  We look forward to continuing this collaboration and highly recommend Paul’s contributions to any arboriculture training programme.

Continuing to Share Knowledge in Arboriculture

Modern tree care goes far beyond pruning. It involves understanding risk, protecting biodiversity, and applying the right tools to support decision-making. Events like this offer a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas and build awareness around the evolving role of arboriculture in managing our natural and built environments.
