Using DynaRoot to Assess Tree Safety After Root Loss on a Construction Site
Client Overview
Tree root stability testing was carried out for a property developer on a live construction site in Ireland. The client requested our support after significant groundworks had taken place near three mature trees. Although the trees appeared healthy, there were serious concerns about structural stability due to 40% root loss. The area was soon to become a high-occupancy space, so understanding whether these trees were safe to retain was essential.
Challenges & Solutions
During excavation and site works, approximately 40% of the root systems had been completely removed. This raised serious concerns:
-
Could the trees still withstand strong winds?
-
Would they pose a future hazard in a busy, public-facing area?
-
Would removal now be a safer, more responsible choice?
However, removing mature trees based on assumptions could result in unnecessary loss of canopy cover, biodiversity decline and delays or increased costs during planning and handover.
To avoid guesswork, we recommended a dynamic root stability assessment using the DynaRoot system. A non-invasive solution that simulates wind load and accurately measures root anchorage.
Our approach included:
-
Installing inclinometers at the base of each tree to measure movement
-
Setting up an anemometer to track wind speed and direction
-
Capturing real-time data during natural wind events
-
Analysing the results to determine the structural integrity of the root plate
This method allowed the client to make an evidence-based decision with zero disruption to the trees or site.
This timelapse video shows part of the on-site setup using the DynaRoot system to test trees after significant root loss.
Key Benefits of Using a Dynaroot System
- Non-Invasive Testing – No digging, no root disturbance, no harm to the tree or soil.
- Real-Time Data Collection – Measures how the tree responds to actual wind loading.
- Objective Decision Making – Replaces assumptions with clear, quantifiable results.
- Tree Preservation – Avoids unnecessary removals and supports biodiversity goals.
As a result of the testing, the client was able to avoid unnecessary tree removals and the associated costs. By retaining the mature trees, the site also preserved its local biodiversity and valuable canopy cover, aligning with the project’s sustainability. Most importantly, the testing provided reassurance that the trees posed no immediate risk, ensuring the safety of future users of the space.
This case demonstrates how combining modern arboricultural technology with experienced consultancy can support safer, more sustainable decisions in development projects.
